PATANJALI’s YOGA SUTRAS

A colorful swirl with the letter v in it.

This is a comprehensive review of Ancient Sage Patanjali’s “Yoga Aphorisms” created in Sanskrit and passed on to us across many, many generations. These are spiritual truths that never changed will never change. The more you read are listen, the more you see and understand the “Spiritual Truth”, which is a growing realization within yourself.

These are the presentations started by Mrs. Ranjani Iyengar & ably assisted by Mrs. Valarmathi Sunder, primarily intended for Mrs. Ranjani’s Hatha yoga class. We should thank them for the excellent presentation of these high level and very difficult to understand spiritual aphorisms with simple and clear examples along the way.

A large body of water with mountains in the background.

What is the purpose of my existence? Why I am here? …..Just watch the Honey Bees! You will get the answer.

The one question I was asking whenever I came face to face with Spiritual Leaders, Gurus and the kind who explore and explain mysticism or religions. Many times, the answer was beyond my understanding or as simple as “To listen to my talk now!â€

But the revelation came from a totally unexpected source, Honeybees.

The answer is always there, and you see it when the time comes…. or it is revealed.

A few years ago, I was coming out a lecture hall after listening to a motivational spiritual talk given by a Guru. Again, I was not enlightened as my question was conveniently ignored by the speaker.                                                                                                                                                                                    The pathway we were walking out was nicely lined with beautiful flower bushes on both sides.  People who attended the speech were discussing about the messages they received that enlightened them.

My enlightening was about to happen outside the meeting hall, right here.

I saw this, the flowery bush right by my side with bright yellow flowers, swarming with big honey bees buzzing and jumping from flower to flower quiet a few of them, may be 50 or more collecting honey for the baby bees the only job they do every day after building the hive for the hatching eggs.

They suck the nectar from thousands of flowers collect honey every day from thousands of flowers.

A spark flashed through my mind….

I remember reading “Bees collect nectar from flowers. Nectar is the sweet liquid that entices the bees to the flower. The bees climb onto or into the flower and suck up the nectar with their “straw-like mouth and collect it in a little sac called a cropâ€.

Here is the spark…†They also collect pollen on their legs. “

They have six legs and their hind legs scrap and collect pollen and dump them on another flower, yes they “they pollinate plantsâ€. The create the seeds for every plant that grows to make this planet green that feeds many lives. Imagine this tiny busy creature could have created the 150 feet tall giant redwood trees. .

All the honeybees know by its own instinct is, it need to visit hundreds of flowers to save a drop of honey for its baby bees. Does honeybees know that they are the builders of this great green planet, that feeds millions of lives.

If you expand this analogy to every creation spanning the range from tiny, microscopic to the cosmic expanse out there…. they all do what this simple bee is doing….

  1. Sustenance …. Making honey to sustain the assigned existence, and enjoy.
  2. . Constantly contributing as intended to the grand plan, that spans beyond your six senses.

If curious and intrigued please read my 3rd article posted on April 4th 2014,
“ Veda uses yoga to take us beyond “Sensory Limitations†through MEDITATION”

The Bottom Line Is Very simple…

Be happy as a Honey Bee,,,

1,Just sync with the simple basic logic that is comfortable and guides you from within which is the foundation, you do not get it from others but be aware this will keep changing and will move you to a higher plane, or you are getting wiser may be. Consciously look around for the next easier step to climb, it is always there waiting

2. Never hurt yourself. Take good care of yourself, you do not want to be a burden to anyone.

3. Try to help any one for a good cause (as you see it) but never hurt someone.

4. Just keep away from people who hurts others.

Collect the nectar, taste the honey and fly through happily! After all the bees know only the taste of honey , but never will be aware of the bigger plan they are in, which is trees and forests. they grow.

Just ignore the bigger plan and be happy! Just be a bee,

A green forest with trees and water

We are a fortunate few who lived in an era where industrial revolution of the last two centuries transformed into a mighty electronic or IT explosion within a few decades.

 From abacus and slide rules to super computers on your desktop.  From Morse code (called Telegrams) to texting across the world (we now call Messaging). We are simply part of this big explosion and coping up in two planes, physical and mental

 “Machines or instruments, cities, ships, or menof-war, all these are simply the manifestation of the will of manâ€_(Swamy Vivekananda_From Karma & its Effects)

We are leveraging our energy physical as well as mental, by outsourcing to gadgets or technologies to speed up our living process. A wheel, (the forerunner of a Jumbo Jet) was invented to do your leg’s work, and an Abacus was created to do your brains work, now taken care by your desktops.

According to Vedas our spiritual evolution to “Human Beingsâ€, is an achievement in our path to the source after many births or “reincarnations†(as different forms of many lives) and their “Karmic†achievements. Only at this level as a Human, as Vedas claim, you are given the capacity to see the “I†(or the EGO which leads you to the “Iâ€). The “I†in you uses the most unique tool “Your mindâ€, to control your operations in the two planes, physical and mental.

Mind is a tool operated by the “Iâ€, in you and the “I†is not your “Mindâ€. This is repeated in again and again in Vedas. Vedas help your “Iâ€Â  to deal with your mind. They are the spiritual laws:

Here I Repeat the message from the Home Page.

“Vedas are without beginning and without end. It may sound ludicrous to this audience, how a book can be without beginning or end. But by the Vedas no books are meant. They mean the accumulated treasury of spiritual laws discovered by different persons in different times. Just as the law of gravitation existed before its discovery, and would exist if all humanity forgot it, so is it with the laws that govern the spiritual world.”
:from the Paper “Read at the Parliament of Religions at Chicago, on 19th September, 1893, By Swami Vivekananda.

These readings from Vedas take us inwards to reveal the answers, and I thank you for joining me in this illuminating journey into “The Selfâ€.

In my experience it is like driving in a winding mountain road at night with your headlights revealing the path as you move forward.  The path reveals itself continuously as you move along shining your lights in front of you. The same phenomenon applies to the seeker of truth. Keep seeking; move forward, you will see more, know more and you will stay in your path. If you stop, you only see the road that vanishes into the darkness and you stagnate.

I welcome you to read along with me. I do try to provide the sources as much I can and always give due credits when needed. Please feel free to follow them for more enlightenment in the directions you might want to focus.

Please try to have an open mind. You do not have to agree or disagree on any information presented here. What you gain here or like here is your own choice that keeps you in your path, ignore the rest.

The spiritual growth or unfoldment in each person is different and sometimes what we see or understand may be different for each one of us. Under such circumstances please do not try to prove who is right or who is wrong. Both are right in their own way, as they see it.

So let us not try to say to each other “IF YOU DO NOT THINK LIKE ME, YOU MUST BE WRONGâ€.
What we think or believe may change soon.

We may seek together, but what we see may look a little different to each other, which is normal

Just shine the light forward and keep moving, the path will be opening up in front of you.

Thank you.

Mother Teresa’s Anyway Poem

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

A Saint’s Prayer for you, me or anyone.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned

Why we need a Radio Telescope to see the universe Or How your Dog sees out side your closed door?

We turn the first page of “Spiritual Scienceâ€, when we reach the last page of physical science that ends with no more answers.

The Vedic Term “MAYA†(ILLUTION in Sanskrit) was used liberally in Sanskrit literature thousands of years ago when explaining spiritual laws of our existence in the Vedas. The vedic explanation did not stop at the meaning “Illusion†but always referred to the ULTIMATE SOURCE behind it that created the illusion to make it comprehensible to the human sense spectrum.  Physical sciences operate within the small window opened to the human senses.  The excerpt below comes  from the book “Yoga-The Key To Life by James McCartney..

“Seeing and hearing are the two principal processes by which we learn. We either look for ourselves, read literature, or listen to instructors in the course of learning. And yet, these two, sight and sound, are only a very small fraction of a large scale of vibrations which extend over a far greater range of frequencies and wave lengths.

Light, for example, is only visible to the naked eye between the wavelengths of 0·00008 and 0·00004 centimeters, whilst sound is only audible to the human ear at vibrations occurring between the frequencies of 30 and 20,000 per second. When one compares these figures with the range of electromagnetic vibrations now in every day use, that is from radio waves of wavelength 200,000 centimeters, down to gamma radiation of 0·0000000003 centimeter,  it is evident that we are both blind and deaf to a considerable range of events, and, conversely, are only sensitive to a very narrow field of vibrations.

Yoga teaches that by proper preparation and training, our senses can be made much more acute, and our range of sensory perception increased well beyond the normal. We shall proceed to find how this can be achieved.

Many people believe nowadays, though in a rather nebulous sort of way, that Heaven is no more than another state of higher vibrations with which we become attuned after we have cast off our mortal body.â€

The same principle was elaborated only recently by the modern physical sciences in the Einstein era as The Quantum Theory of Waves and Particles. Here is a nice link: (http://www.pitt.edu/~jdnorton/teaching/HPS_0410/chapters/quantum_theory_waves/index.html)

“We have seen that the essential idea of quantum theory is that matter, fundamentally, exists in a state that is, roughly speaking, a combination of wave and particle-like properties. To enter into the foundational problems of quantum theory, we will need to look more closely at the “roughly speaking.”â€â€¦.

The current “Quantum Theory†seems to take us back to the ancient vedic “Maya†.

In the future readings we will see more about how Veda deals with Maya.

Introduction to Vedas and Vedanta:

In this website the word “VEDA†mostly refers to “VEDANTA†(also referred to as The UPANISHADSâ€).

In short Vedas are visual and vocal representation of the highest level of abstract universal spiritual laws. These laws that govern our presence or existence in our presumed reality (“MAYAâ€in Sanskrit) are literally explained in VEDAâ€ANTHAM†or Vedanta. Vedanta in Sanskrit means beyond Vedas. Vedanta is also known as “UPANISHADS†in Sanskrit, meaning, sitting down near a teacher or GURU, to learn.

In fact most of these ideas are brought out in the form of discussions in the forums convened by the rulers of large wealthy kingdoms of the past in India. Sometimes real life situations, presented in the form of mythological stories, were used to explain the practical Vedanta. Vedanta or The Upanishads takes you beyond the realm of religious rituals.

Your understanding of Vedanta or Upanishads is governed by the enlightenment or unfoldment you have attained and the distance you have traveled in your spiritual journey towards the source from which you came.  Merging back with “The Source†is the ultimate goal of every being in existence. According to the Vedic belief, such a spiritual Journey might span many cycles of births. Remember your soul never dies. In the universal time scale your whole lifetime may be less than the “Blink†of an eye!

The Vedic messages elevate you to a higher level or perspective from where you see a dense forest as a smooth grass land.

With this short introduction let us try to see more in our future readings!

A word about Sanskrit “The Language of Vedas”.

Sanskrit is a scholarly literary language, like Latin and Greek. One of the earliest known language that evolved for learning the laws of spirituality and science. It retained its original tonal structure and grammar mainly because it was passed along to the next generation vocally; mouth to ear and again mouth to ear cycle.  In ancient Vedic Schools Vedas were learnt by hearing and repeating  many times until the Vedic words were pronounced with correct intonation by the  student to the satisfaction of the teacher or Guru. Sanskrit is a very musical and covers wide audio spectrum which was retained by this elaborate recitation teachings. Depending on the region Sanskrit was Written in Devanagari, various BrÄhmÄ«based alphabets, Thai in vocabularies, and Latin script. What was “heard†was recorded in the local learner’s dialect. So, Sanskrit retained its vocal and tonal structure of the language from the early Vedic era spanning thousands of years. Even now in India the Vedic Schools follow the age old ancient “hear and repeat†vocal teaching methods to pass on the Vedic recitations to the coming generations.

Thanks to Sanskrit, we are able to hear the Vedic Ideas as “Heared†by the “Rishis†thousands of years ago from the “Sourceâ€.
